What is the FRAIL scale?
The FRAIL scale is a five-question frailty screen: Fatigue, Resistance (climbing 10 steps), Ambulation (walking a few hundred metres), Illnesses (5 or more of 11 listed conditions) and Loss of weight (5% or more in a year). It was described by Morley, Malmstrom and Miller (2012, J Nutr Health Aging 16(7):601-608).
How is the FRAIL scale scored?
Each yes scores 1 point, for a total of 0 to 5. A score of 0 is robust, 1 to 2 is pre-frail and 3 to 5 is frail (Morley et al., 2012, J Nutr Health Aging).
Is pre-frailty reversible?
Often it can be improved. Pre-frailty is the stage where resistance training, enough protein, regular walking and a medical review of illnesses and medicines can still shift the direction. The scale only screens, so a higher score is a reason for a proper assessment.
What should I do if my score is 3 or more?
See your doctor or a physiotherapist for a proper assessment of strength, walking speed, balance, nutrition and medicines, then start a supervised progressive exercise plan. Do not wait for a fall.
Get measured properly, then coached.
